About Mt. Killimanjaro

Kilimanjaro, once an active volcano, hasn’t shown any seismic activity for over two centuries, and it hasn’t experienced a significant eruption in more than 100,000 years. While the most iconic photographs of Kilimanjaro are often captured from Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, most trekking routes to the summit actually start from within Tanzania. The ascent itself isn’t technically difficult — the gradual slope makes it achievable for hikers of varying experience levels. Reaching the summit usually takes between 6 to 8 days. However, for those with limited time, there are shorter treks available that don’t go all the way to the top. The origin of the mountain’s name is debated. Many believe it combines "kilima," meaning “mountain” in Swahili, with “njoro,” a word in the local KiChagga language that may mean “whiteness,” referencing the snow-capped peak.
